SPAM
I received SPAM from an xname.org server
Firstly, be sure that the spam went through one of our servers, ie that in mail headers you have references to one of the following IP range:
  • 195.234.42.0/24 (from 195.234.42.1 to 195.234.42.254)
  • 193.218.105.144/28 (from 193.218.105.145 to 193.218.105.158)
  • 178.33.255.252
  • 88.191.64.64
  • 92.243.14.172
report us abuses as soon as possible, including full mail headers, to: abuse@xname.org

I received SPAM for a web site, with DNS hosted by XName
  XName don't encourage SPAM.
XName is a free hosting service, so all SPAM complaints about hosted domains are studied, and action can be taken.
Please report SPAM with full mail header to abuse@xname.org, but not to our IP providers, nor our registrars.

We encourage you to report SPAM to sender IP provider, as web site IP provider as XName is not the only free DNS hosting existing.

Can I use SPF to prevent SPAM ?
  Yes
SPF (http://spf.pobox.com)antispam system is based on TXT records. Simply go to your preferences page to activate TXT records for your zones.

Can I use DomainKeys to prevent SPAM ?
  Yes
DomainKeys (http://antispam.yahoo.com/domainkeys) antispam system is based on TXT records named "_domainkey". Simply go to your preferences page to activate TXT records for your zones, and create a new one called "_domainkey" matching your needs.

Registrar Configuration
I use XName primary name service. What Name Server is serving my zone ?
XName has three main name servers.
They are:
  • ns0.xname.org, IP address 195.234.42.1.
  • ns1.xname.org, IP address 178.33.255.252
  • ns2.xname.org, IP address 88.191.64.64.
Both are serving your zone.
When registering a new domain, you have to give these parameters to your registrar.
We also use different IPs to retrieve zone contents and to do zone transfers either from your master server if you use XName as secondary, or to your slaves if you use XName as your primary.
Please be sure to allow connexions from/to:
  • 195.234.42.0/24 (from 195.234.42.1 to 195.234.42.254)
  • 193.218.105.144/28 (from 193.218.105.145 to 193.218.105.158)
  • 178.33.255.252
  • 88.191.64.64
  • 92.243.14.172

I use XName secondary name service. Which Name Server is serving my zone ?
  XName has three name servers.
Please configure your primary name server to accept zone transfers from 195.234.42.1, 178.33.255.252 and 88.191.64.64.
. We also use different IPs to retrieve zone contents and to do zone transfers either from your master server if you use XName as secondary, or to your slaves if you use XName as your primary.
Please be sure to allow connexions from/to:
  • 195.234.42.0/24 (from 195.234.42.1 to 195.234.42.254)
  • 193.218.105.144/28 (from 193.218.105.145 to 193.218.105.158)
  • 178.33.255.252
  • 88.191.64.64
  • 92.243.14.172

XName web interface
How do I enter a Resource Record where the key is "@" ?
You mean where the key is the current origin. Enter the entire FQDN of the zone in the key box. Valid for A and PTR only.

Can I have only one NS record, the default one (ns0.xname.org) ?
  Yes, you can.
But for redundancy, every zone should be served by at least two name servers, located on different networks.
XName provides you two name servers, so you don't need to find another one. just use ns0.xname.org and ns1.xname.org.

What is the difference between primary and secondary ?
A primary name server acts as "Master".
It means that all information are stored on it, and all modification has to be done on it.
A secondary name server acts as "Slave".
All its information come from the master.
There can only be one primary server. As for the secondary servers, you can have as many as you want: the information they have about your zone will be replicated from the primary server.

  Can I register IPv6 records ?
  Yes.
Secondary supports IPv6 records, and in primary zones, AAAA records are supported.
Reverse IPv6 zones are also supported, either .ip6.int and .ip6.arpa zones (primary and secondary).

Does XName allow dynamic updates ?
  Yes.
See our Dynamic Update page for details.

Using dynamic update, I got an "out of range" serial
On primary zones, our serial numbering scheme (daily based) allow only 99 serials per zone and per day. So if you do more than 99 modifications in a day, either using the web interface or any dynamic update client, you will get an error telling you that your serial is "out of range".
To avoid this, use dynamic update client less (only when IP has really changed !).
To solve a temporary problem, wait next day (noon at GMT+2) and modify your zone once. the new serial will be OK.

Which zones can I register ?
All zones are accepted (except TLD).
It means you can register bar.com, foo.bar.com, but not foo (like com, net, info...)
All TLD are accepted (.com, .net, .info, .fr, .in-addr.arpa...)

  Can I register in-addr.arpa zone ?
  Yes.

I deleted and created zone again, but "Zone already exists"
When deleting a zone, the zone is not effectively deleted since next configuration reload. You have to wait until next reload before beeing able to create it again.
This delay is due to the purge mechanism.

  Can I register ip6.arpa or ip6.int zone ?
  Yes.
Either on our primary or secondary web interface, ipv6 support is enabled.

  Can I use * CNAME records ?
Yes, but be sure to know what you are doing, wildcard usage is recommended for experts only.

Can I use TXT records ?
  Yes
Simply activate them using your preferences page.

Can I use Round Robin ?
  Yes.
Simply add multiple A records with the same name and different IPs, or multiple CNAME records with the same name and pointing to different names.

Can I import existing DNS configuration into XName ?
  Yes.
When creating the zone as Primary, specify the current DNS server to do a zone transfer.
Warning: be sure to allow zone transfer from our web server IPs range - 193.218.105.144/28 and 92.243.14.172 - on your DNS server

Can I delete my user ?
  Yes.
When logged in, you have a link on the left named "Delete your account".
All your zones will be deleted from our name servers.
if you are administrator of your group and have sub-users, all users of your group will also be deleted.

XName DNS configuration
What is the reload frequency of your DNS server ?
The server is currently reloaded every hour.
If the server load increases to much, we will schedule the reload not so often.

I would like to have other parameters in your DNS config, like allow-update, etc...
Just ask. We will take a look at your needs, and if it looks interesting for everyone and it can be added without too much change in our architecture, we will implement it. For example allow-transfer parameter has been added, following users request.

Can I change my zone ttl, refresh, etc... ?
  Yes.
When using advanced interface (you have a checkbox in your preference panel), SOA and TTL will be modifiable.
Default values are :
TTL : 1D
refresh : 3H
retry : 1H
expiry : 1W
minimum : 1D
Warning, TTL lower than 600 will be rounded to 600.

Why is my domain name appended twice to my record ?
If you have registered a CNAME (or Name Server), and nslookup or host command output looks like:
www.mydomain.com is an alias for machine.myotherdomain.com.mydomain.com
(or mydomain.com name server ns.mydomain.com.mydomain.com)
this is because you forgot the trailing dot . in your DNS configuration. Simply modify your zone, and add the trailing dot.
Remember: each time you put a fully qualified name in your DNS configuration, you have to append a trailing dot.

XName servers are not up to date
If you use XName servers as slave for your zone, here are the possibilities for them to be outdated:
  • your master is not reachable from our servers. Try to issue a traceroute from your master to our servers to see if the internet link is working correctly between us.
  • your master indicated in XName configuration is not configured to allow transfer from our servers. See slave configuration.
  • you changed the serial number of your zone on your master, and now the serial on XName servers is greater than the one on your master. In this configuration, XName servers will never update until your master has a serial greater than their one. Increasing your serial to be greater than the one on XName servers will do the job.

How to reset the serial of a zone on slaves ?
To reset the serial on slaves, proceed as follow:
  • On your master, modify serial to be 2147483647 (which is 2^31-1) plus the serial value of slaves
  • reload master, so slaves will update. Wait for slaves update before going to next step.
  • now modify serial on master to the desired value (suggested: YYYYMMDDnn where YYYY is the year, MM the two digits month, DD the two digits day, and nn an incremental two digit number (from 00 to 99)). Reload your master.
  • wait for your slaves to update.

XName Philosophy
  Why is it free ?
It's free because too much people earn money with a non-reactive and non-user friendly name service. The only way to change this is to provide a better service, cheaper.

Do you accept companies selling domains to use your service ?
Yes, but, we ask for following:
  • keep our name servers names, ie do not replace ns0.xname.org or ns1.xname.org with ns.yourcompany.com in your client configurations
  • If you are happy with the service, a donation or contribution would be appreciated
  • And if you have a little space somewhere to inform that you are using our service, we will be the happiest ;)

  I think it's a great idea. How can I contribute ?
Have a look at the contribute section.

  Is any support available ?
  No.
You can ask on xname@xname.org. If you are a contributor (see the contribute section) we'll try do do our best to answer quickly. Otherwise, you'll have to wait, from one day to one week (or more, depending on our busyness). Hey, remind, it's a free (working) service !
